Here we are in June already.  Before you know it we will be nearing the end of September and looking forward to Last Chance and Finals.

As reported earlier, Last Chance will be held in Okanogan this year and the committee will be co-chaired by Tracy Predoehl and Lynn Bremner.

The committee system has worked very well this year.  Both Spring Fling and Futurity races ran very smooth and were great fundraisers for WBRA.  Thank you to everyone who was involved.  Your hard work is very much appreciated.  Let’s keep this rolling with the last two events.  If you do not see your name on the above lists and have not helped on a committee this year, please contact me.

I apologize for being so tardy with an update.  I’ve had a bit of a mishap and injured my knee.  I’ve had surgery and will be recuperating for the summer.  My doctor tells me up to six months recovery.  Needless to say, this has put a bit of a crimp in my summer barrel racing plans.  I wish everyone the best this year as I will be your cheerleader on the sidelines.  Please send me a note to let me know how things are going – I’d love to hear from everyone.

April Committee Update:

Happy Spring!

WBRA’s first of four major events is in the books.  The Spring Fling races were very successful with an impressive number of entries in every category.  Congratulations to the committee members for their efforts.  I, as well as many others, appreciate all of your hard work.

Next up, Futurity Weekend!  This is the biggest event for WBRA during the year and much effort has gone into planning it.  Dusty Campbell has taken charge of the WBRA races at Futurity and has done a wonderful job of organizing the committee.  There can never be too much help, so if you have a little extra time during the weekend, let Dusty know or heck, just jump right in and help.  Dusty along with Audrey Buechner have raised all of the money for the purses at the WBRA races.  Way to go ladies!  I have no doubt that this will be another very successful fundraising event for WBRA, just as Spring Fling was.

Tracy Predoehl and Lynn Bremner have volunteered to co-chair the Last Chance races.  Tracy and Lynn are planning to hold Last Chance at the Okanogan Fairgrounds this year. 

The Finals Committee will be chaired by your WBRA officers.  Tentative plans are to hold finals in Ritzville at the rodeo grounds.

Be sure to look at the Sponsors section of the website.  We have had a great deal of support from our sponsors.  Please be sure to let them know how much we appreciate them.

I hope that the spring snow storms have missed your house as I am sure that this crazy weather is sure to end very soon.  Keep dreaming of sunshine and warm weather!

February 2008 Committee Update:

Wow! It’s already February.  That means that the Spring Fling (March 22^nd) and the Futurity (April 18-21) are just around the corner.

Please remember that when you paid your membership, one of the responsibilities of membership was to volunteer to work at one of the four major races WBRA holds during the year (Spring Fling and WBRA Races at Futurity are two – the others are Last Chance and Finals).

I know that many of you, like me, are still buried in snow.  It’s very depressing but this is a great time for you to decide how you might fulfill your membership requirement.  Before the snow melts and you begin the busy months of riding and planning your race schedule, take a few minutes to decide how you want to help.  The Spring Fling and WBRA Races @ Futurity Committees need more member involvement.  Both of these events will be held in Moses Lake.

Hello Everyone,

I hope the holidays were good to you.  It’s a New Year and time to focus on two of WBRA’s big Spring events – Spring Fling and WBRA Futurity.

As mentioned in my previous article, my job this year is to coordinate committees for the  major barrel races WBRA holds each year.  Thus far, many of you have been very shy to contact me.  Don’t be afraid – I really don’t bite – it’s just a nasty rumor!

Here is an update on the committees for Spring Fling and WBRA Races at Futurity.  Members with ** beside their name indicates that they have contacted me.  If your name is not on the list, please let me know.  If you haven’t contacted me, please do so.

Spring Fling – March 22                                WBRA Races at Futurity – April 19 & 20

At this time, it is important that we get volunteers to raise money for the Spring Fling races.  Here is a breakdown of what is needed. The money raised will help to sponsor purse and prizes for the races.  Keep in mind that Spring Fling will be a one-day event with a double-header format.

$300 - Open Race

$100/class - Novices (2000, 1000, 500)

$50/class - Novices (250, 50)

$50/class – Youth & Jr.

Claretta also needs to confirm her office staff for the races.  If you would like to assist with taking entries prior to the race, taking entries and money at the race, keeping track of times, or announcing, let me know.  As we get closer to the event, confirmations on people who would like to assist with gates, setting barrels, and rakers will need to be done.

As you can see, the WBRA Races at Futurity still need a Chair.  The chair will be responsible for coordination of the WBRA races only at Futurity, not the Futurity, Derby, Never Won a Saddle or Poles races.  The chair will not “do it all” but rather coordinate their volunteers.  Please contact me as soon as possible if you would like to take on this responsibility to support WBRA.

Thank you to Dusti Campbell, Maria Pearson and Hanna Lally for your efforts in fundraising for the races at Futurity.  If you would like to join these ladies in fundraising, please let me know.

WBRA is a great organization that has been around for a long time.  It has been the support of its membership that has made it stand the test of time.  Let’s keep this spirit alive.  Give of your time at one of these races and enjoy the rewards of knowing you belong to a great group with a love of horses and barrel racing.

PS – if you are planning to help with Last Chance or Finals, start thinking about it.  Time passes very quickly.  I need Chairs for these races so we can determine where and when they will be held.

Hello, I would like to introduce myself.  My name is Shannon Springer and I am this year’s Ways & Means Chairman for WBRA.  In the past, Ways and Means has focused on fundraising.  This year, I have been asked to take on a slightly different role.  The focus will be on membership involvement in the four major races that WBRA holds during the year (Spring Fling, Futurity, Last Chance, and Finals).  Initially, I have been asked to assist in finding a Chairperson for each of these events and help coordinate members to assist on their committees. 
 
Chairpersons for each of these events will be asked to take on oversight of WBRA races with the assistance of their committee members to include securing an arena, fundraising of purse/prize money, and securing help for grounds, gate and office personnel during those races.  Committee members will work with the Chairperson to put on a successful event.  There are many ways to contribute:  fundraising, taking entries, assisting in the office before and during the races, helping to get the ground prepared, setting the course, setting barrels, opening a gate, etc. 

Each member of WBRA for the 2008 year is asked to contribute in some way to one of the above mentioned events.  On the membership application you were asked to designate which committee you would like to take part on.  I will be using this information to help the race Chairs get their committees put together. 

I know that many of us will also be competing at these events and it is sometimes difficult to help especially if you have a young horse in training or a child to assist.  By having the membership contribute, it is hoped that the duties will be limited in time and effort.  For example, if there were enough people willing to set barrels, a person would only be asked to work one race during the day.  If enough people would be willing to do fundraising for the purse/prizes, the added purses and prizes for these events may be able to grow.  The success of these events helps WBRA to remain a viable organization able to continue honoring year-end winners with great prizes.  Let’s face it; the price of fuel will probably not go down so bigger purses would help to have bigger payouts to offset those expenses.  Bigger races attract more entries, which in turn pays more places.
  
I have started to contact those of you who provided an e-mail on your memberships and wished to help with either the Spring Fling or Futurity.  For those of you who I don’t have an e-mail address, could you please contact me and let me know where you would like to help.  I am fortunate to have already had one person step up to volunteer as Chairperson for the Spring Fling.  Thank you Claretta Walker.  This year’s Spring Fling will be held in Moses Lake March 22^nd.  I would like to find a volunteer to Chair the WBRA races at Futurity as soon as possible.  The WBRA Futurity is also being held in Moses Lake April 18 – 20.  The Chair for the WBRA races at Futurity would only be responsible for the WBRA races, not the Futurity, Derby, Never Won a Saddle races, etc.  The Chair would work with the Futurity Chair to coordinate efforts.  Thank you to Dusty Campbell, who is already fundraising for the WBRA races at Futurity.
